Why should I consider Calne RFC?

Calne RFC has ambitions. The club has now established itself as one of the top teams in the Dorset & Wilts divisions. Whilst this is the case, two of Calne’s most effective players have moved to London and a third has stepped down to take on the coaching of the club. We also anticipate that between 5 to 7 players may step down at the end of the 2006/07 season, bringing about an end of an era for the club. The upshot of this is that, the club’s doors are open wider than ever before to new talent. We really do want you and we genuinely have 1st XV starting places available for the 2006/07 season.

The club recognises that it needs to recruit more players especially the big hitting, line breaking, ball carrying type. Centers, Half Backs, Back Row, Props and Locks are all needed for the start of the 2006/07 season.

As an example, in the summer of 2004 Calne attracted a number of established Chippenham RFC players and one from Devizes, all immediately made an impact and earned 1XV starting places.

What can Calne RFC offer me?

One of Calne RFC major goals is to appear worthy of players who live in Calne but play rugby elsewhere, just like yourself. It’s no secret that the Calne of 3/4 years ago was not the most outwardly open of places. But the sudden realisation 2 years ago that the club was in severe danger of withdrawing from the league as the result of a number of senior players retiring forced the club into a massive overhaul. There is a new committee, new coaches have been appointed, and there are new team captains and a new selection committee. A recent influx of new players has created a very welcoming atmosphere, where partners and families are always welcome.

The club has ambitions but realises certain things need to happen before a realistic and lasting journey up the leagues can be made. To do this we need people like you!

Our coaching staff is excellent and they will help you develop as a player and assist you reach your full potential. There is a good balance of games. Some will ease you into the action others will test you and some will push you to your limits.

As you know, the social side of rugby is very important and with the majority of players staying after matches now, our social side has never been as strong.

How do I go about restarting?

If you’ve had a long lay off you are likely to be a bit rusty, a little unfit and susceptible to picking up a knock or two. Calne RFC recognises this and will ease you back into action, at a rate that suits you. The club has a high emphasis on fitness, mainly because we are not the biggest of teams, our sessions will get you back into shape and ready for action. It is likely you will play a bit part role in the 2nds until your confidence is back. You will probably secure a 2nd team place a while after that. But it doesn’t stop there, may people in your position may find them on the bench for 1st team league or cup game. But all this takes time and no pressure is applied whilst you re-find your feet.

What is senior rugby like?

In senior rugby you will play with and opposite players ranging from 17 to 60 years old and anything from 9 to 25 stone. It is therefore critical that you arte properly prepared for your first senior match. Our highly experienced coaching staff will ensure that you are nurtured through the process and not thrown into the deep end. Your development is vital to the success of the club, as clubs like ours depend on attracting guys in your age group. You will start for the 2nd team whilst you learn the moves and build your confidence before being introduced, when the time is right, to the 1st XV. By the time you are 18 or 19 it is likely that you will have settled into a position and showing the old boys that their place is in serious danger!

What is expected in terms of commitment?

This is a very important subject and one that is probably greatly miss-understood. The bottom line is that if you are willing to play, you will at some point for the 2nds. To secure a place in the first team you will need to train at least every other week. This takes into consideration shift patterns or shared family commitments. For the 2nd team we recommend, for your own well being, attendance to at least one training session a month. More will secure you a place, but remember if you’re willing to play and can keep us up to date with your availability it is highly likely you will be called upon.

Do I have to play?

Simply put, no. Our doors are open to anyone who wants to get fit or stay involved in rugby despite and injury or minor disability. Please remember this is a contact sport and training sessions do involve varying degrees of contact, please use your discretion and seek advice from a GP before hand. Rugby is a great way to get fit and strong. The sport also helps to build confidence and through it, you will build lasting friendships.
