Kearney cleans up at dinner
The club’s new coach, Richard Kearney, scooped the prestigious and highly revered player’s player award, at Calne RFC’s 2005/06 annual presentation dinner. The retiree was the recipient of the player nominated and most sought after award and then also the coaches player. To add to his tally, Kearney also won a joint share of the Dusty Miller shield with Matt Arnold, for the most man of the match nominations. Matt was recognised as one of the most consistent performers throughout the season, with his set piece work a key part of Calne’s successes. For the second consecutive season Guthrie Holliday, or Geevs, racked up more tries than anyone else and his, staggering, 24 league and cup tries were more than enough for him to retain his top try scorer status. Also on the try scoring front, Damon Murphy also retained the Dai Pongo award, top forward try scorer, for the second season in a row. But this time by just the one solitary try, with 8 to his credit. Matt Snell equalled Jackie Arnold’s record of 3 consecutive Clubman wins. His continued and impressive work developing the club, on and off the pitch, goes from strength to strength and all at the club recognise his efforts and input towards the difference in the club from some dark old days, 3 odd years ago. Mick Dyer was the grateful recipient of the most committed trainer award, thanks to his very consistent training attendance and his positive attitude during each and every session. Mike Robinson was voted the club’s most promising player by his peers. The youngster continues to mature and his play continues to impress all that see him and this award is recognition of a fine player in the making. Whilst Kearney scooped the majority of the first team awards, Vince Treen scooped all of the second team awards. Treen landed the second team top try scorer award with 8 tries to his credit, but he was pushed hard all they way, just winning the award by one try. But most impressively Treen was voted by his peers as the second team player of the year, in one of the closest votes ever. Jackie Arnold, first-aid support, and Gemma Hope-Smith, the event organiser, both received bouquets courtesy of the club, for their outstanding efforts. Jackie’s week in, week out first aid services are of vital importance to the club and especially the players. Whilst Gemma’s social event organisation provides those special events which helps give the club a focus to the increasingly important off pitch activities. Clare and Neil Young received a special round of applause, as it was announced during the festivities that Clare is expecting their first child. And in a special presentation, Holliday, who now leaves the club for a taste of the big city, was presented a South African players tie from Phil Thomas as a recognition of the talent he has lavished on our humble club. |
