Calne Rugby Football Club has gratefully accepted a first team strip from their new sponsors, Awdry Bailey & Douglas (ABD), a long established firm of Solicitors at West Hill in Calne.

For the up and coming local rugby club the “out of the blue” approach from ABD was gratefully accepted and taken as a sign of how far the club has come is a very short period of time. For Awdry, Bailey & Douglas, who have offices in Devizes and Wootton Bassett as well as in Calne, the purpose of the sponsorship was to not only develop their own business profile but to share in the fast developing sense of community building throughout this old Wiltshire town.

This most generous donation will see Calne first XV “looking the business” in its new strip in good time for the New Year, the remainder of the 2004/05 season and the entire 2005/06 season. Awdry, Bailey & Douglas’s main insignia is displayed on the front of the shirt and also neatly embroidered on the arm. Giving the club a distinctive and professional look, this marries up well with the new outlook and philosophy of the rapidly emerging club.

Calne RFC Development Officer, Matt Snell, said, “ We are looking forward to promoting the Awdry, Bailey & Douglas brand and working with such a well established and respected local establishment. I see benefits for both our organisations and we have taken great deal of encouragement form this new deal, which will spur us on toward being even more effective on and off the field. This new sponsorship will allow us to create opportunities to raise our own profile, whilst promoting our new sponsors’.”

Snell joked, “It’s always a benefit for a Rugby club to have the patronage of a company of Solicitors, you never know when they may come in handy. Joking aside, we would never have attracted such a quality sponsor if the Club had not moved on from some dark old days. It is no secret that the club has had a poor disciplinary record in the past. Thankfully, that is now history, and within the space of two years we have turned the club completely around by starting a junior section, rebuilding our disbanded second team and generally taking a more active role in the community.”

Snell was full of praise “I must give the players my thanks, as the club as a whole is perceived by the actions of its players. It must be said their actions have been no less than perfect. Our new coaching staff has also had a very substantial affect, their zero tolerance policy towards poor discipline is directly attributable to our recent success. Long may it continue.”
