Adam Young makes history for Calne RFC
Adam Young’s try at the end of the first half created history. The red headed firecracker blasted over the line for Calne RFC’s Junior sections first score and lifted his team metes to a valiant 2nd half display against the impressive Copper Avon Tyres side. CAT were on a roll after winning 50-Nil at Swindon the previous week leaving Calne RFC officials worried about a complete and demoralising white wash. These thoughts were soon dismissed as Calne’s pack, in their first scrum, bullied CAT off their own scrumage ball. Thanks to impressive individual displays by Shane McCafferty, whose tackling and dominance of the ruck, combined with the explosive running of Andy Pitchley, Calne stayed with in touching distance of their peers for most of the game. Calne were chasing the game from the offset as the experienced and technically adept CAT side picked up an early score converted form the side line followed by another try and a easier conversion for a half time lead. 5-14. A rejuvenated Calne got the 2nd half off to with bang with a sustained period of pressure in the CAT half, unfortunately a few infringements and penalties saw CAT back on the offensive and pick up another try. Undeterred Calne disrupted CAT ball, Andy Pitchley picked up the fumble to run the length of the field for a stunning score for Courtney Earl to convert. With the weather lashing in, the now tiring, Calne’s players faces CAT finished the stronger with another try to seal the game. Nethertheless, Calne left the field jubilant and full of anticipation for their next fixture that will most likely be against their friends over at Swindon. Coach Alan Matthews was rightly impressed with his team and will now work on some of the more technical aspects of the game and further develop Calne RFC’s junior section. Final score Calne 12, CAT 36 On a more sentimental note the game was watched by Club Captain Taff Morgan, who exactly 20 years ago ran a colts team at the club. That team came though as a unit and became the all conquering team in the 00/01 & 01/02 seasons. We wish this team the same if not greater success.
