2003 7’s Tournament match report
Our first 7's tournament got off to a great start, and although 4 teams did not show on the day, the 6 teams that did compete made up for the earlier set back with some surprising good quality play. The spectators turned out in their droves and were thoroughly entertained by the open yet physical style of play. The tournament was played firstly with 2 pools of 3 teams followed by a spoon final two semi-final and the grand final. Pool 1: The Jolly Miller, Kings Arms & Rec Club. The opening games saw the King Pins sneak a win against Dokic Joinery 15-17, and the Jolly Miller wiping the floor with the Kings Arms in an entertaining 42-0. The next pool games saw the Wheatsheaf beat Dokic Joinery 12-7 in such a way that some teams and spectators considered them favourites. The Kings Arms played the Rec Club and lost their second game 22-0. The final pool games saw the King Pins play the Wheatsheaf in game where a number of players started catching the eye for the player of the tournament title such as Andrew McCaffery, Chris Long and Graham Neil. The King Pins rolled out winners 29-0. The in form Jolly Millers defended their perfect defensive record against the power of the Rec Club again with a 34-0 stomping of the home team. The spoon final was contested by Dokic Joinery and the King Arms who were without the services of inspirational leader Andy Fletcher with a suspected dislocated shoulder, he won't thank me for saying it was caused by running into one of his team mates! Dokic's Dean and lee Dokic were outstanding throughout the game and tournament but tired and battered they could not stop the Kings Arms winning 20-0. The first semi-final between pool A winners the King Pins and the Pool B runners up the Rec Club. Dave Wilkins, Mike Snell and Andy Bell battled hard but the King Pins class was just to much final score 37-7. The second semi-final was contested by poll B winners the in form Jolly Millers against the surprise package of the tournament the Wheatsheaf. The Millers through James Foley and Mike Robinson stole the show and laid their claims to the player of the tournament title helping their team to win 29-0 and maintain their clean sheet. The much awaited grand final was monumental battle between the King Pins, now flowing with confidence, and the defensively astute Jolly Millers. In a tight game with tiring players and superb support form the on lookers the King Pins defied the odds with an outstretched arm just sneaking the ball on to the try line to score the only try of the game to seal their hard days work as Calne RFC Rugby 7's Champions. The player of the tournament title was gratefully received by Graham Neil who fought off stiff competition form Andrew McCaffery and James Foley. Upon receiving the winner's trophies the King Pins team captain said he was honoured to be the first to receive the tournaments trophy. He also thanked the organisers and wished the club the best with future tournaments. Team manager Kevin King was pleased with the way his boys played and was genuinely shocked to see the team he entered to make up the numbers take the title. The organiser, Matt Snell, would like to thank the following individuals: Jacky Arnold & Bob Martin for the Medical cover. Matt Arnold & Taff Morgan for refereeing. Peter Brummell & Graham Robinson for running the control desk. Pete McGarry, Neil Young, Aaron Brolan, Mike Charlwood, Alan Wicks and Kev King for 'running the line'. Alan Henley & Anthony Redmond for the photography. Phil Thomas, Nicola Hammond & Jenny O'Rourke for the food. And Michelle for the kiddies face painting. To sum up it was fantastic to see so many of Calne's residents both playing and supporting the tournament, which must now become a permanent fixture in Calne & Calne RFC's calendar. It was clear to see that everyone had a great day of Rugby played in the spirit it was meant to be. |
