Calne Continue to Dominate

Calne 2XV entered the game in positive mood and were determined to put on a show for the VP's who were supporting from the sideline. This was the first ever VP's day for the 2XV and the team didn't fail to impress.

With a few players crying off just before the start of the game and a freak injury to Prop Chris Austin (ankle) the team was reshuffled by Captain Tom Morten.

Calne kicked off, starting with a 'funny' which found touch. The lineout was smoothly stolen and a powerful first drive allowed the backs a chance to shine. Antony Jane fixed his man, passed to Mike Cyster who pushed through a defender before passing to the new winger "Kevin" for the first try.

Supermarine kicked off but a powerful counter attack again opened up the field and some dummy runs divided the defence giving Tom Porter a simple try between the posts. The conversion was good giving Calne a 12-0 lead. It was clear from the touchline that the Supermarine heads dropped and the writing was on the wall after only a few minutes played.

Calne didn't take their foot off the gas and a few minutes later Anthony Jane (again) passed to Mike Cyster who cut back inside, broke two tackles and went over for the 3rd Calne try.

Over the next ten minutes Calne continued to threaten the Supermarine line. A great kick and good lineout play gave us a great position but sadly despite some great play by the backs to open up a 2 man overlap and a powerful drive over the line by Gareth the fourth score seemed reluctant to come. However a massive effort by the pack overwhelmed to Supermarine scrum so quickly that they spilled the ball allowing Mike Charlwood to simply apply downward pressure to secure the 4th try of the game.

Supermarine started to show some more spirit but huge tackles by Gareth and several of the rest of the team quashed every attack before they had a chance to threaten. Another couple of attacks by Calne proved fruitless before full back Tom Porter made a spectacular run, avoiding several defenders and scoring between the posts. The conversion was duly made by the outstanding Tom Blomfield, extending the lead to 29-0.

Another run by Prop Paul Wood was supported on by a forceful forward drive, resulting in Tom Porter going over for the 6th try of the game. Tom Blomfield was unlucky to miss the conversion, from near the touchline his effort bounced back off the upright.

Another Calne attack followed almost immediately, Supermarine stole the ball but the clearance kick was caught by Jason Wood who hurled himself the 10 yards through the defence and over for try 7.

Supermarine then at last managed to secure some possession. Mike Charlwood became isolated and had the ball stolen. Supermarine kicked down the line and took the ball from a lineout just short of the Calne line. Supermarine made a couple of good drives but the focus and passion of Calne's aggressive defensive tackling allowed the ball to be recovered and a great clearance kick ended the first half.

Calne made a few substitutions at half time, bringing on Ed Gillams, Matt Snell and Craig Wood. Calne continued to dominate the game and Supermarine were forced to reduce their line out to 4 players to try to disrupt Calne's domination. Although the points were flowing as quickly as in the first half it was only a matter of time until Craig Wood scored extending the lead to 44.

The game continued to go in Calne's favour. A long kick into Supermarine's 22 was chased by several players and the Supermarine full back attempted to hack it back down the pitch. Ed Gillams fell on the ball to secure it and popped a great pass up to Captain Tom Morten and, having avoided 2 defenders, scored his first try for the club. Ed Gillams then decided his work for the day was done and came off to rest his ankle.

A penalty just short of the Supermarine line gave Woody senior (Paul Wood) the chance to shine and he quickly took the penalty and took a short walk over the line to score… although he hadn't reckoned on the ref who felt that the penalty needed retaking, denying Paul his score. The penalty was taken, this time more to the ref's liking and after some strong forward play the 3rd phase ball was spread to the backs. Tom Blomfield and Anthony Jane produced a lovely switch that put Anthony Jane in for Calne's tenth try. The conversion finished the scoring at 56-0.

Special mentions must go to Kevin, Mike Parfitt and Tom Morten for their first Calne tries, to Tom Blomfield for his man-of-the-match performance and Chris Austin, who injured himself before the game even started! Supermarine must also take some credit for fighting to the last whistle.

Captain Tom Morten was delighted with the performance and said "It was important to put on a good show for the VP's and I think we showed them why we are sitting top of the league."
