That Winning Feeling
A determined Calne side travelled to Supermarine looking to get the league campaign back on track and the travelling support were not disappointed. The hosts started well and threatened to score in the opening exchanges. However, this Calne side were not going to roll over and concede and cleared their lines well. Calne then put the pressure on and refused to let Supermarine off the hook. The visiting pack consisting of Chris Austin, Paul Wood and captain Tom Morten was dominant in the scrums and Nick Turner was winning everything in the Lineout. This was a very encouraging performance for many players and there were 15 players who could have collected the man of the match pint at the end of the game. Nick Raven, Andy Pitchley and Adam Welch tormented the opposition with some powerful running and scored two tries himself, and Captain Tom Morten and brother James Morten worked hard the entire game and made some great tackles. The first Calne try was scored after Supermarine had pressured the Calne try line. Scrum half Adam Welch picked up the ball and ran 90 metres to score a great individual try and after Andy Pitchley’s intercepted score it was 14 points to nil. Calne gradually moved further ahead with another two tries to lead 26 -0 in the second half. However, with only a minute left on the clock, Supermarine were seeking to ensure that they had some points on the board when the forwards produced some quick ball for their fly half to sidestep the opposition to score, making the final score 5 -26. Captain Tom Morten was delighted with his team’s performance as the combination of forward power and back play was fantastic. |
