Calne Maintain Pole Position
Calne (2XV) Crusaders, sponsored by the Spice of Bengal had a score to settle against Marlborough 2XV after having lost to them very early in the season. Calne travelled to Marlborough in confident mood but were cautious due to the fact it was half term, with meant the hosts would have many students at their disposal. Calne arrived with a number of key players missing but this did not stop the away team dominating the early stages. The pack lead by Captain Paul Wood pushed Marlborough off the ball in the scrums and secured the ball well. Prop Matt Arnold put in a great performance and Simon Fry (Hooker) was managing to steal a lot of ball After only a few minutes a penalty was awarded to Calne just outside Marlborough's twenty-two and Calne's ever dependable Tom Blomfield stepped up and slotted the ball between the uprights for an early 0-3 lead. The score remained 0-3 for some time, with Calne unable to break through a stubborn defence. However, Marlborough was under a lot of pressure and after not being able to clear their own line, the ball broke lose and Mike Charlwood got the downward pressure needed to secure the first try for the visitors. The 0-8 lead seemed to fire up the Marlborough team and Calne made some basic errors which allowed the home team to get a lot more possession. After a Try saving tackle from winger Kevin Adams the half time whistle went with Calne in front, but only just. Marlborough made some changes in the pack to stop Calne's forward dominance and brought on a few ex-first team players which evened things up and enabled them to win some of Calne's ball. The visitors were intent on keeping the ball in the pack to keep the Marlborough backs out of the game. Winger Vince Treen and Julian Brand made impressive returns after injury and Tom Porter and Anthony Jane both had solid performances However, it was Marlborough who would score next after some great play from the pack. The ball was rumbled up the field and despite Calne's best efforts; the ball was grounded to make it 5-8 (The conversion was missed). Calne's top of the table position was now in serious threat as Marlborough's belief continued to grow. Calne fought back and had another penalty opportunity. Tom Blomfield again stepped up and showed great composure as he made it 5-11. To their credit Marlborough fought back hard and attacked the Calne line. However, Calne would not be denied and showed tremendous heart and determination to claim a hard fought win. At the Recreation ground (Calne), Calne 1XV beat Marlborough 1XV 31-24 to maintain their promotion challenge and completed a great day for Calne Rugby against Marlborough. |
