Cutler Cuts Loose on Chippenham
Promoted Calne (2XV) Crusaders travelled to Chippenham to play their third string in preparation for the league title decider on the 29th March. Chippenham 3XV have had a mixed season in division 2 and were looking to show Calne that next season would be a tough challenge. The game started in terrible conditions with strong winds and snow sweeping across the pitch. But this did not stop Calne from producing some good running rugby which delighted the travelling spectators. Due to the conditions, it was never going to be easy for either side as both teams looked to get an early advantage. The scrums were evenly contested and the front row of Paul Wood (Hooker), Shane McCafferty (Tight), Pete Brownlie (loose) put in solid performances against a determined Chippenham team. But Calne were most effective at the breakdown and aggressively dominated the home team. The Morten brothers (Matt, James & Captain Tom) were the backbone of the team and wouldn't let Chippenham settle. The first try came in the first half as Tom Porter jinked his way to the line to get a well deserved score. The conversion was missed, but the conditions were not going to be kind for the kickers. The first half whistle sounded with Calne knowing that they had to score more points to secure the win. As the weather cleared in the 2nd half, Calne seemed to up the gears and Prop Shane McCafferty made his presence felt with some good drives forward. In open play, the visiting pack were very effective in creating opportunities to score, but were unable to capitalise. However, it was Calne's new winger Mike Cutler who stole the show by running his first of two tries. Both were "wingers" tries showing good evasion skills and speed. But the overall team performance pleased Captain Tom Morten. The Pack were very aggressive today and won everything and considering the conditions the backs spread the play across the pitch well. As for the tackling, Mike Charlwood and Jason Wood put in some great hits and the ever improving Pete Brownlie had a solid game at prop. The Man of the Match award had to go to Mike Cutler though, who had his dirty pint and quickly ran off to the toilets in celebration. |
