Seaside Breeze
Calne secured their place in the 2nd round of the Dorset and Wilts vase on Saturday with a win over Poole. With several key players out with injury and other commitments Calne relied on a number of 2nd team players to step up to the mark with all of them showing why they were picked. With the journey still in them Calne started off very slowly, Poole took full advantage of this and opened the scoring after just 6 minutes with an unconverted try. Poole kept the pressure on, dominating the scrums and running the ball well. Calne then woke up and started turning it on with a line out robbed by Alan Wicks and a great display from the backs, with full back James Gladding joining in a move and allowing Guthrie Holiday to run a great line to score Calne’s first try in the 15th min. It then took just 4 mins for Holiday to score his second after weaving around several defenders as if they belong on a Sebuteo pitch to score next to the posts which Andrew Donegan converted. Calne were then playing better all around the field, the first time front row of Mick Dyer, Chris Austin and Jason Dolman steadied up the scrums and Pete McGarry and Simon Lazenby causing havoc in the loose as they do every week. This play carried on and built towards another Calne try by Damon Murphy after a perfect little pass from Stuart Boswell taking them 19-5 up to go into half time. The second half was very much like the first with Calne having quiet periods and then turning the game within an instant. This showed as Poole were the first to score a try in the second half which was converted bringing them to one score behind. This woke Calne up again as they were straight up into the Poole 22 within 2 minutes, and with a cross field kick from Donegan, chased up by winger Mike Robinson who gratefully received a perfect bounce for him to score under the posts with a dive that you expect to see at Twickenham. Donegan also converted. It then only took a further 6 minutes for Calne to secure the victory after a line out won and passed straight out to the backs but the ball never went past the fly half as Lewis Baker ran in a solo try, side stepping and dummying the whole Poole back line. Again Donegan converted.Back row Rich Kearney was awarded man of the match for his good all round play.Calne travel to Minety on Saturday for what could prove to be a crucial league fixture. Final Score. Poole 12 Calne 33 |
