Calne Steal The Win

Debutant Lee Myring opened his Calne RFC try scoring account on the back of a fine all round performance as Calne’s 2nd team earned their first win of the season against Wiltshire Constabulary. As well as finishing off a devastating break by fly half, John Hope-Smith, Myring showed a great deal of defensive grit, as the winger proved to be impassable.

Former junior section member Barry-John Hutchinson opened the scoring with a sweetly timed run off a ruck at the fifteen minute mark. Hope-Smith failed to add the extras in front of the posts. Ten minutes later a carbon copy try was scored, this time buy the club’s Junior Chairman, Alan Matthews MBE. Again, Hope-Smith failed to convert.

The frenetic game was just taking its toll on both sets of players when the Air Ambulance was scrambled and the players had to vacate the pitch. The nicely timed rest break suited the Police better and they rallied hard up the slope and earned a penalty attempt. Unfortunately, for the home team, the attempt was scuffed wide.

Both teams set about the 2nd half as they had the first. Calne looked, but in most cases failed, to spread the ball wide and the Police continued their tight 10 man game. The Constabulary nearly made a game turning break through, but were thwarted by skipper Jason Dolman who held up a would be try scorer.

Calne fielded a total of 4 new recruits all of which had a positive impact on the game. As the second half progressed so did seventeen year old full back Mat Riches. The youngster sliced up the home team’s rear guard action, earning plenty of territory for his team.

Late in the first half Hope-Smith’s pace forced the Police in to their 22 and only a last ditch tap tackle stopped him from scoring. But with great skill the fly half laid the ball up perfectly for the flying Myring to take the score. Scrum half Steve Jacket took over the scoring duties and added the extras.

Final Score. Wilts Police 0 Calne II 17
