New Boy's Pushed Aside
A potent blend of pace and power was unleashed on a hapless Malmesbury, by a Calne team determined to catch up on lost 'points for' opportunities, after cancellations of two fixtures earlier in the season, including one from Malmesbury. Whilst the top two teams have been able to run up large scores, Calne have to battle and claw their way to victory in each game, to earn their third place. A strong looking Calne side took to the field with the additional services, and bulk, of veteran Daron Thomas and new recruit Mat Morton, in the pack. County trialist duo, Damon Murphy and Guthrie Holliday, were also in attendance. Only the influential 2nd row presence of Pete McGarry, was missing from the regular line up due to injury, allowing Rich Kearney to make his come back after a short lay off. Calne wasted little time in setting about business. Calne controlled possession and were allowed to generate territory. Thomas and Motren both carried well and into the heart of the Malmesbury pack. Donegan's quick ball allowed centers, Neil Young and Holliday, the freedom to slice through their opponents. Holliday was particularly effective and looking in fine form just before his U20 county trials. But it was Donegan's half back partner, Lewis Baker, who stole the first half headlines, with a stunning hattrick of tries before the interval. Bakers' first half efforts were joined by one each from Holliday, Neil Watkins, Alan Wicks, Young and Smith. Malmesbury's only reward for their efforts was three points from a penalty. The second half promised more of the same, however, Malmesbury capitalised from a lackluster restart and Calne allowed the Malmesbury no 8 to pick off a scrum, and drive down Calne?s blindside, earning a lineout on the 5 meter line. Calne fumbled their own throw and Malmesbury were first to the loose ball for the score. Following the big wake up call, Calne were able to restore normal service and, winger, Mike Robinson exposed a weakness on the outside of his man and cruelly exploited three times for his own hattrick. Openside flank and senior county trialist, Damon Murphy, started to revel in a game that was becoming more and more open and he himself was soon on the scoreboard. As was the veteran Watkins with his second. Not to be left out, or over shadowed, Holliday, completed his hattrick by bagging two more and the Man of the Match award. |
