Calne’s newly reformed second team tested their hand against one of the countries newest teams, Sutton Benger. The seconds wanted to test themselves against Benger, who are in the newly created Dorset and Wilts division III.

Vince Treen, Seth Shardlow, Jason Wood, Mike Smith and Mat Riches boosted Calne RFC’s hope for the future with stand out performances against a big, strong and determined Westbury 2nd team. Riches weighs in at a 17 years old and just pips Shardlow as the youngest player on Calne’s books, who’ a meagre 18.

Westbury arrived with 14 men and borrowed Calne’s Lee Myring’s services for the afternoon.

Treen open the scoring after 5 minutes, with a powerful run down the left wing, but not to be out done, right wing, Jason Wood, picked up his first try for the club.

Despite having a good pool of players to call upon, Calne’s second team was still suffering from a shortage of front row players. Fortunately, former club captain, Ian Smart, was available for the first time in 5 weeks after recovering from a knee ligament injury. 1st team winger Mike Robinson bravely volunteered for hooking duties to complete the front row with 2nd team captain, Jason Dolman.

Robinson picked up the next try, then Neil Watkins and Damon Murphy finished the scoring for the half.

The second half saw the introduction of the 18 year old Shardlow who enjoyed an afternoon of reeking havoc on the Westbury three quarters. He quickly picked up two trys and was unlucky not to pick up another two.

Treen also picked up his second and was easily the team’s top carrier for the afternoon. Murphy and Watkins also picked up their second. The last word was left to new recruit Andrew Bowers. Full back Mat Riches weaved through the tiring defence and was hauled down just short of the line, he quickly recycled ball was scooped up by Bowers for the score.
