Calne Power Through Pewsey
Calne knew they were going to have to earn the win on Saturday when they looked over during their warm up and saw 8 Fijians walking towards the changing rooms. The game started at 100mph and carried on at the same pace for the full 80 minutes resulting in a very fast and well-spirited game. Calne started the stronger of the 2 sides and within minutes found themselves putting pressure on Pewsey in their 22, but Pewsey managed to clear their lines. Calne kept up the pressure in all areas, especially in the scrums. After the first few scrums Calne knew they had the making of Pewsey and this is where the first points came from. Pewsey knocked on about 10 meters out from their try line and Calne put into the scrum, the ball was struck nicely by hooker Max Whiston and stopped at the back. No8 Alan Wicks called for the drive and controlled the ball as if it were stuck to his foot for the 10 meters to pick up and ground the ball for the first push over try. Only moments later Calne were awarded a 5 meter scrum and the script was the same. Pewsey were unable to do anything to stop being driven backwards, except collapse the scrum, which they did. The ball still came out and Fly half Lewis Baker made the most of the penalty advantage, by selling a perfect dummy and crossing the line for his first try of the game which Andy Donegan converted. Calne then appeared to let their foot off the gas and Pewsey had a dominant period of the game and were rewarded with a converted try after one of the Fijians was given space to run in and score. Then came Calne's next try, with some strong ball carrying from the second row Neil Watkins and Matt Horten and with the typical 'in your face' play from Daron Thomas. Calne were soon back in control and with another scrum on the Pewsey 5 meter line, this time the scrum didn't collapse and Alan Wicks controlled the ball over the line again for his second try. This was soon cancelled out with a lapse of concentration allowing Pewsey to cross the line again for another try of their own. The half ended with Donegan converting a penalty. The second half was pretty much like the first, with Calne having most control over the game and finding themselves in the Pewsey 22 on many occasions but with credit to Pewsey the score could have been larger if it weren't for the improved defense in the second half. Calne were without their normal line out jumpers, but Rich Kearney controlled the middle of the line well with a little help from the throwing by Matt Arnold. This helped towards the next score. Calne won their line out and Guthrie Holliday got his hands on the ball, made a typical weaving run to add yet another try to his season tally Donegan again converting. The pressure carried on and after several phases, Lewis Baker crossed the try line again for his second try. The nearest Pewsey got to scoring in the second half was from a line out, their captain caught and drove well and crossed the Calne try line but was held up as he tried to convince the referee that he had grounded the ball with an unconvincing grin on his face. Calne worked their way straight back down the field and after a wave of attacks Neil Young found himself in support to dive over the line for the final score of the game. Calne play at home at the Recreation Ground again this Saturday when they play host to Colerne. At the same time, Calne's 2nd team did battle with Chippenham 3rds. The seconds eventually lost 34-7, but not before impressive performances were seen from scrum half Andrew Bowers, No 8 Trystan Williams and new recruit James Lynch playing at inside center. Full back Jeff Price was the away teams only try scorer on the day. Final Score. Calne 39 Pewsey Vale 14 |
