Strength In Depth
On the back of another outstanding performance, Calne move up to second spot in Dorset & Wilts Division One North. The two points received by beating Swindon II's, at their Greenbridge Road ground, leaves Calne just the one point off league high flyers Corsham. Thanks to Pewsey's shock victory against Cooper Avon Tyres. News of which spread around the county faster than a flu epidemic. With, now third place, Westbury winning too, Calne's four point 'for and against' advantage is all that separates Westbury's fallen giants from this new-fangled Calne side. Making for a mouth-watering clash, at Calne's Recreation Ground, on the 4th of December when the two sides meet for the first time since doing battle in the Southern Counties division, two years ago. But to get to this point Calne had to deal with a Swindon side looking for a big scalp. The Swindonian's showed Calne no respect as they took on Calne's fast improving pack from the off. Calne started a little slowly, probably the result of a number of forced and tactical positional changes. Calne had to compensate for a number of backline unavailability's with Mike Charlwood, taking over from Andy Donegan, James Gladding came off the wing to play fly half, wingers Darren Penny and Mike Robinson deputised in the centre, whilst Alan Henley and Vince Treen stepped up from the 2nd team to cover the vacant wing spots. Neil Young's move to full back completed the reshuffle. Calne opened the scoring thanks to spoiled push over try. Swindon's over eager scrum half committed a professional foul by bravely diving at the no.8's feet, thankfully, for the visitors, the referee was immediate in his awarding of the penalty try. Hooker Mike Palfrey added the easy two points. With the conditions, very wet under foot and even the odd sprinkling of snow, dictating a predominantly forward biased game, there was a genuine concern that the respective backlines would freeze up. As the pendulum like battle between the increasing muddied forwards repeatedly swung forward and back, it was Calne's revised backline that opened the deadlock. The stalemate was first fractured when flying right wing, Henley, collected a poor clearance and earned a penalty from his incursion in to the danger zone. Charlwood's quick tap and lay off set up, Daron Thomas and his imposing figure, up for the try. In quick succession Calne's three-quarters struck again, albeit with a healthy dose of good fortune this time. Charlwood fed Gladding, who supplied a fast flat ball to Robinson, Robinson missed it but Penny hacked through, chased and scored. Palfrey was left with a simple conversion in front of the posts. Whatever was said during Swindon's half time talk certainly did the trick, the hosts came out a different side. They threatened Calne's, so far, clean sheet by steadily building pressure and territory. Unfortunately the last pass went astray or a poor kicking option helped Calne's rearguard action lead by openside Damon Murphy. Calne weathered this storm and Murphy started to dominate proceedings. Swindon could not get to grips with the powerful national swimmer as he repeatedly stole Swindon ball and ran a mock in the loose in the finest individual performance made by a Calne player this season. The second half was in danger of fading away scoreless, until Charlwood's quick thinking from his own tap penalty set up Murphy for a worthy score. As well as adding the conversion, Palfrey added his name to they try scorer column too. Now playing in the centre he linked up superbly with his new comrades and soon found himself heading to the white wash, just as his fine run looked to have been halted by a valiant last ditch tackle, he broke though. Adding the conversion for good measure. |
