2nd`s Take College Back To School

Calne’s reformed 2nd team earned their first victory of the season through an heroic defensive effort in a scoreless last quarter. Battling up the slope, Calne, struggled to get out of their 22 during an almightily onslaught from their Swindon College counterparts who were desperate to readdress the score line. Despite being taken over their try line twice the 2nd’s managed to prevent any score and hold out for the much deserved win.

However, the game was in jeopardy as the Dorset & Wilts referee assigned to the match became unavailable. Fortunately, Swindon College offered one of their members as a referee. And to his credit, both sides were allowed to play open, free flowing and not overly criticised rugby.

Playing down the slop in the first half Darren Penny opened the scoring with a fine solo run. New recruit, Craig Hurcombe, opened his account with the club shortly afterwards finishing off some very positive play from the three-quarters. The extras were added and Calne looked comfortable.

College hit back in fine style. After working their way up the pitch, they released their back line. Their bulky inside centre did the damage as he broke a number of tackles on his way to the try line. Rallied by their error Calne struck back. A full 15 effort was required to get in to the danger zone. Winger Alan Henley came off his left wing, joining play mid-field, he broke one tackle and just as he looked to have escaped the last line of defence he off loaded in the last ditch tackle. Despite being nearly intercepted Henley’s pass found Hurcombe and the new boy picked up his 2nd try of the day.

Both sides rang the changes at half time. But soon after play restarted veteran Rich Kearney broke free for a full 50 meter run to score between the posts. Unusually prop Mick Dyer added the extras by means of a drop goal.

Despite the good win Calne’s 2nd team still needs to attract a number of new players to ensure its continued existence. As we understand modern day commitments, we can accommodate anyone willing to put their boots on once in a while for a run out with the boys.
