No roll over from Hungerford.

Calne had to work hard for this victory. A determined and feisty Hungerford fifteen made Calne look silly at times. It was Hungerford that made the better start after Calne lost the vital services of tighthead Mat Arnold to a calf injury sustained during the warm up. A disjointed Calne started with No.8 Alan Wicks moving up to loosehead and Mick Dyer moving across to the tighthead spot.

The early possession was Hungerford's but a lack of a cutting edge kept territory in Calne's favour. After 10 minutes disaster stuck again. Blindside flanker Rich Kearney had to leave the field with a rib injury. Coach John Crozier brought 40 year old veteran Rod Woolford into the fray.

Calne slowly got more possession and with their first real incursion into the Hungerford 22, they were award a penalty try. Hooker Mike Palfrey stepped up to add the conversion in Donegan's absence.

Palfrey, Pete McGarry and Neil Watkins also crossed the white wash in the first half, with no extras added. In the blustery conditions the pack played a tight and direct game. They constantly powered their way up the middle of the park to create good positions with some wonderfully well controlled rolling mauls. Both Palfery and McGarry were set up in this fashion. Not to be out done the backs started to express themselves and soon created a move that spanned the entire length of the pitch. Neil Young and Guthrie Holiday combined well, with Young firing off a pass from behind his back to set up Watkins' try.

The second half started in the same fashion. Direct forward play and mazy three quarter play form Calne created tries for Young, Damon Murphy and Holiday, all of which were converted by Palfrey. Young's first try of the season was a peach. Again from good forward play Young found a way out of what a tight little cul-de-sac and set off on one of his trademark runs. He stepped his way through three defenders to score between the uprights.

In only his second start for the first XV winger, Vince Treen, impressed his peers. The youngster's powerful running and his ability to shrug off would be tacklers created problem after problem for the Hungerford defence. With a little more fitness and confidence, Treen will soon be causing the selectors a headache of the nice variety.

Despite dominating for most of the game Calne stepped off the gas and allowed, a fourteen man, Hungerford into an encouraging position. Hungerford took their chance well through some fine running for their bulking outside centre, for an unconverted score. However the tries from Holiday and Murphy allowed Calne to finish strongly.
