Holliday Time

Calne prepared for their trip to the seaside town of Weymouth with a 86-0 victory over The Wiltshire Fire Bridade.

Vince Treen’s triumphant hat trick of tries, on is return from injury, was eclipsed by a massive eight try haul from the 18 year old Guthrie Holliday. A mix of Calne’s 1st and 2nd team sides stepped in to play Wiltshire’s Fire Brigade after the latter were let down by their scheduled opponents.

Holliday got the scoreboard ticking over in Calne’s favour when he slashed through the Brigade’s defence, who were clearly unprepared for the South African’s pace and deceptive strength. Treen, recently recovered from a dislocated shoulder, was next in line and scored with his first touch, of the oval ball, since injury. At full tilt and with an arching line he left the covering defenders with little chance.

It wasn’t long before Holliday had picked up his first half hat trick with two more line splitting excursions in to the brigade’s half. Treen added his second, as the winger exploited and over lap created by his team mates.

Just as it started to look as if the three-quarters were going to have all the fun, burly prop Mick Dyer pounced on a loose ruck ball and steamed over for the score. Centre, James Gladding, got the backs rolling again thanks to Paul Jenkins’ jinking run opening up the defence. But it was left to Holliday to wrap up the half with his fourth.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first. Holliday collected another four tries, the brigade simply couldn’t fight the youngsters explosive pace. Treen collected his first hat trick for the club, but only just. Thinking he was home and dry after a break from the half way line, he eased up and was blindsided by the flying Jeff Price, one of two Calne loan players. Price made the tackle just short of the line, but Treen released the ball, stood up, scooped the ball back up and placed it coolly over the line, despite being severely short of breath.

Gladding had the last say. Jenkins unlocked the brigades defence in the dying moments and the field open up in front of him. But he lost he nerve, or responsiveness from his legs, and kicked ahead. The flying gladding beat, the 2nd of Calne’s loan players, Simon Lathbury to the ball and ran the last score of the day in and completed the 86-0 score line.
