A squad of 16 played their first trail game of the season against a mix of Devizes 2nd & 3rd team players who were playing their 3rd trail game of the season. The game, comprising for 4 quarters, ended 10, 7 to Devizes after a late try stole victory from the Calne side who were being observed by John Crozier for the first time.

Mike "Bundi" Burden scored the club’s first try of the season when he scoped up the ball from a failed Devizes back line move and showed a good turn of pace to out run the covering defence for his first try for the club. Mike Charlwood converted the difficult touchline goal. Bundi’s score gave Calne the lead after an earlier surge for the Devizes pack allowed a second rower to crash over for an unconverted try.

Calne’s forwards put in an impressive performance with new signing Mick Dyer and club stalwart Pete McGarry making good impressions early. Coach, Crozier, was pleased with his charges effort, determination and drive. Mike Charlwood and Mike Smith caught the eye in the backs with some fearless tackling, while Ben Grey and Neil Young broke the line each time of asking.

Injuries to Mat Arnold and Mike Robinson meant that that a very reluctant prop had to be borrowed from the opposition for the last quarter. Despite this Crozier was quick to point out that whilst Calne had 15 of its own players on the pitch they weren’t just winning but had control of the game.
