An Anchor Road epic
The two old Southern Counties adversaries met for the first time since their higher division days to renew their good natured rivalry. The epic onslaught that ensued showed no indications of the well reported intention, of both teams, to remain in Division 1 to consolidate for another season. And therefore, not challenge Corsham for the solitary promotion spot. Both the high flying teams went all out for the victory and unfortunately for the Calne, the visitors pack was just too good on the day. From the off Westbury took the ascendancy. Their first incursion in to the Calne half was rewarded with a converted try. This early lead was further extended with a penalty. Calne hit back with a superb individual try from Paul Jenkins. The fly half jinked his way though the Westbury back row and converted his own try. Just as Calne looked to build pressure, disaster struck. The sin binning of both Calne centers allowed Westbury to score 12 unanswered points. Now playing catch up rugby and restored to a full compliment, Calne opened the game up, for the reminder of the half, with their trade mark attacking style. Westbury's organization was excellent and the score line was unchanged going into the half time break. A highly motivated Calne side soon had Westbury pinned back on the try line. Calne made a play from Westbury's own play book and rolled a maul, the result of a catch and drive from a 5-meter lineout, over the Westbury line. New signing and hooker James Foley rose triumphant from the pile of bodies. Jenkins added the tricky conversion. Calne still needed to chase the game but the tactical astuteness of Westbury was to deny the hosts. Westbury starved Calne's talented backline of ball by playing a well organised tight game. Westbury's patience was well rewarded with two more trys in quick succession, taking the game out of Calne's reach. Calne, to their credit and the new mindset installed by Coach John Crozier, never gave up. A now looser Westbury surrendered some ball and Calne were quick to capitalise on these scraps. Left wing John Hope-Smith restored a little respectability to the score line by finishing an incisive backline move on the back the relentless efforts of the home sides pack. Jenkins finished the scoring for the day by adding the conversion. Calne's side-lined skipper, Andrew Donegan, was frustrated by the result. "I was a little worried that the unavailability of a number of key players was going to really hurt us today. But I must give credit to those guys that stepped in they were all fantastic. The sin binnings were obviously our downfall, had we played with a full 15 throughout the game, I'm sure the result would have been very different. But today was not to be our day and we are still on target for achieving our goal of a top 4 finish." |
