CENTURIONS
A near full strength Calne clocked up a massive 15 tries to 1 against a 13 man Pewsey. Guthrie Holliday collected his first hat trick for the club and extended his lead as the clubs top try scorer. Second row Neil Watkins, No. 8 Alan Wicks, winger John Hope-Smith and scrum half Andy Donegan all pick up two each. Darren Penny, Neil Young and James Gladding all added their contributions too. Donegan's nine successful penalties rounded off the score at a neat 100 in front of the strong home crowd. A most generous Pewsey allowed Calne to wear their new Awdry, Bailey & Douglas sponsored strip. Pewsey graciously donned their change colours despite being the travelling team. But that was the only generosity offered as a solid forward effort from the villagers made Calne sweat in the early exchanges. Pewsey opted to play with a full eight man scrum leaving their back division two light. The decision showed signs of paying off as the early exchanges were very evenly contested and a fair amount of possession was secured by the visitors. Calne eventually managed to win some ball and wasted little time moving the ball wide for Murphy's first try. The expectancy of more was soon quelled as Pewsey earned, and neatly converted, the long range penalty effort. Calne struggled to settle despite trys from Neil Wakins and Guthrie Holliday. As the ring rustiness wore off Calne started scoring trys a full 15 would have struggled to stop through fine efforts from John Hope-Smith, Alan Wicks and Darren Penny. Half time came with Calne showing some daylight and Pewsey starting to tire. Coach John Crozier, during the previous Thursday prematch prep talk, challenged the boys to knock up a cricket score in one of the remaining league fixtures. His charges took up the challenge and cashed in a lot earlier than Crozier could have expected. A nine try second half tally pleased the boss no end. An outstanding second half performance from Neil Young earned him the man of the match award as he, along with Paul Jenkins, set up the majority of the second half takings. Returning scrum half and captain Donegan opened up the second half scoring, by finishing a length-of-the-pitch move, in fine style. John Hope-Smith interchanged nicely with Alan Henley for is second but just as things looked to be going all Calne's way, Pewsey mustered an almighty effort and launched a ferocious attack. Another penalty was awarded and the quick tap and go found Calne's defence wide open. Embarrassed by their earlier mistake Donegan's men bounced back in the best possible way. Holliday broke on one his now trademark runs to readdress the scoreboard. Donegan lead by example and picked his second of the afternoon. Scotsman, Young showed a clean set of heals as he placed the ball between the posts. In contrasting style Wakins broke from the back of a maul and forced his way to the whitewash. Holliday had a full 65 meters to go to complete his hatrick, not to be out done the forwards were next to make a mark as Wicks was unopposed for 49 meters after a clever layoff form Donegan sent the defence the wrong way. It was fitting in the end that Calne Cricket Club's 1XV batman of the year, James Gladding, finished the scoring taking Calne to a full ton. The Full back had to shake off an earlier knock to the leg as he ripped up the touchline with no real competition thanks to his pace. Visit the gallery pages to see match pictures |
