Calne Dismissed By College

Swindon College Old Boys progressed past the first round of the Dorset & Wilts Vase by dismissing Calne 10-22 at Calne's Anchor Road ground. A dominant 25 minute spell at the end of the first half, with College scoring three trys, was to leave Calne shell shocked and fearing the worst for the second half. But a Calne side consisting of eight 2nd team players, with three more on the bench, stood firm to win a dreaded second half.

With Calne's 2nd team opposition,(Swindon College 2nd's) In the second team cup, Calne 2nd`s were left without a fixture. The brave selection policy included Andy Horman at hooker, Dave Holmes at loosehead, Paul Hulbert(2nd team Captain) in the 2nd row, Max Whiston on the blinkside flank, Darren Penny in the outside centre channel, Vince Treen on the right wing and Jon Martin at fullback.

College started strongly and despite Calne winning an early scrum College started what was to become a prominent feature of the day. Homan's strike was good but College just battered Calne back and stole the ball to create an attack of their own. Calne struggled for ball as College's pack dominated up front leaving Calne just a few scraps to work from. Fortunately, for Calne Colleges' discipline was, as expected, found wanting and Donegan was able to gain an early 3,0 lead.

Despite the great odd Calne did well to hold on to this lead for 15 minutes as College applied the pressure through the forwards. College were reward for their patience and impressive play as they earned a scrum 15 meters from Calne's line. The inevitable surge from the pack came, but instead of the obvious push over, the No 8 broke and exploited a big blindside and set up a superb converted score.

In a stunning period of play College crossed Calne's line twice more. The second try was a wonderful solo effort from the left winger. On a set play, he came off his blindside wing took the ball on a sweetly time switch move and beet three men with his pace on the way. Again the conversion was missed

Colleges' third try was the best of the day. Again the pack did the hard work and College's No 8 picked up and surged forward, he was eventually brought down but a classy little lay off to the supporting hooker set up the unconverted score on the next phase of play, on the turn of half time.

Evidently the half time break was just what Calne needed. Regardless of the ever retreating scrums No 8 Alan Wicks and, scrum half, Donegan were able to clear the ball from the onslaught, thanks to Horman's sweet striking, with little flicks by the wily No. 8. With more possession and Colleges' faltering discipline Calne slowly worked their way back into the contest. Colleges' left wing completed his brace, he exploited an overlap from a turnover with his pace. Again the conversion was missed.

As Calne competed their way back in to match, College became increasing more frustrated. The game was marred by two incidents. The first was when a substitute college player saw fit to run onto the pitch to join in a skirmish and more worryingly second team captain Pail Hulbert had to leave the field, with a nasty head wound, after an outrageous stamping incident by College's replacement scrum half.

In the face of College's intention to turn the game in to a battle of another kind Calne's 1st/2nd team became even more resolute and determined to embarrass College by crossing the white wash. A crunching tackle, from John Hope Smith a 1XV winger playing on the flank, created a turnover ball. Fittingly it was a 2nd team winger that finished the move. Mike Burden beat is man with some class and despite the cries of 'dive' from the crowd, Burden coolly placed the ball down for the converted score.
