New Boys Beat The Old Boys

Despite being without the services of six regular first team players Calne managed to put one over their Swindon based rival Swindon College Old Boys. Calne missing Trev Wick, Alan Wicks, Mat Arnold and Neil Young due to Trev's wedding and James Gladding, Mike Smith and John Hope-Smith due to injury.

To compensate, coach Crozier brought experience in to the pack in the form of veterans Paul Hulbert, Jason Dolman and Rod Woolford and opted for youth in the backs bringing in Mike Robinson, Vince Treen and Darren Penny.

Calne were first on the scoreboard with stunning solo effort from outside center Guthrie Holiday. He sliced his way though Colleges' well organised defense using a frightening combination of power and pace. His 60 effort was left unconverted. Mike Charlwood was next on the scoreboard after Andrew Donegan broke the first line of defense. He offloaded to half back partner Paul Jenkins who further put College on the back foot and as he committed the last defender he spotted Charlwood in support. Charlwood's classy line was rewarded with a converted score.

In a magnificent period of play, the home side moved the scoreboard again.Prop Mick Dyer collected the restart and moved the ball to ex-Chippenham teammate Jenkins who split the College defense with another fine run.Jenkins drew the defense and off loaded to Holiday who raced 30 meters before being caught by the full back, however, Robinson was on hand. He took Holiday's neat pass and cruised in between the posts despite the two defenders hot on his tracks. Donegan added the conversion.

As the first half drew to a closed College battled their way back into the game. They were rewarded after a period of sustained pressure, when a blindside moved created an overlap, for an unconverted try.

The second half started and despite hope of a continuation of the fine rugby played in the first half, the game rapidly when down hill after both sides discipline slipped. During the stop start second half Calne were forced more on the back foot. The young Robinson and Mike Palfrey kept their cool and their outstanding tackling frustrated College and kept them at bay for the rest of the game.
