Marlborough Suffer Backlash.
A highly motivated and near full strength Calne side smashed their way through a Marlborough side riding high on the back of a recent good run. Calne scooped eight tries, seven conversions and a penalty in their 57 point haul. Calne skipper Andrew Donegan bagged 32 points including a first half hatrick despite sustaining an inadvertent knock in the opening play, following post match hospital treatment Donegan is suspected of fracturing two ribs. The match was officiated by the Chairman of the Dorset & Wilts Refereeing Association, Robin Miller. Mr. Miller stepped in at the last minute to stand in for a referee who sadly and suddenly lost his father-in-law. Post match Mr. Miller expressed his admiration for both clubs and the sprit in which the game was played. He particularly praised the hosts for their hospitality and courtesy. This accolade was gratefully accepted as recognition of the improvements made in the club's demeanour during the last season, which is indeed a far cry from years gone by. Donegan's first half haul of 22 points was set up by the most impressive forward performance of the season. In stark contrast to last week's battering, upfront, by Swindon College, Calne's pack was able to shove Marlborough back in the scrums. This was mainly thanks to Coach, John Crozier's, prematch emphasis on scrumaging. The forwards pounded the scrumaging machine for a good 30 minutes prior to kick off. Donegan's first try came from a rare push over scrum, the scrum half beat No.8 Damon Murphy to the ball once the forwards had claimed their scalp. His second was similarly opportunist. Marlborough miss-controlled a defensive 5 meter scrum, allowing Donegan to pounce on the loose ball. The third was again from the base of the scrum. He picked up and set off toward the posts, cutting through three defenders on his way. As expected Marlborough had no intention of rolling over. And they were rewarded on the stroke of half time with an uncovered score from a cleverly worked cross-field kick. The second half saw the arrival of the irrepressible Ian Smart. Making his return form retirement, the trimmer, Smart waved his motivational magic wand and had the boys all fired up and full of belief prior to kick off. Guthrie Holiday collected the first try of the 2nd half. His pace and arching line left defenders bemused by his 22 meter jaunt. Neil Watkins was next. Having earlier swapped positions with Murphy the new No. 8 picked up, from the base, and bullied his way over for the score. Paul Jenkins set up former Chippenham teammate Watkins for his second try. The outside half drew the back row before laying off the inside ball for Watkins to run in. |
