Offence beats Defence, and no it's not American Football..
3rd Place Supermarine, boasting the leagues stingiest defence, travelled to 4th placed Calne, who coming into this game boasted the leagues best scoring record, in this near top of the table epic. Offence triumphed over defence as Calne's backline ran in three trys past the much vaunted Swindonian defence, whist Marine found their attacking options severely limited by the efforts of the home team. Marine were no rollover and all the early phases were dominated by Marine's pack. With the Swindoner's 4 forward play phase strategy spotted by Calne, Calne swiftly countered through some quick thinking and played a faster forward game. Calne moved their well drilled opposition about by changing the point of attack and not over committing to Marine's sapping mauls. A full 20 minutes past, as the defence held the offence, before the English-South African centre, Guthrie Holiday, further advanced his position as the club's leading try scorer. Welshman and flyhalf, Paul Jenkins, spotted a big gap behind the blitz style defence and slid a delicate little chip across the whitewash. Holiday spotted it early and beat the covering defence in the ensuing footrace. Prematch, coach John Crozier, emphasised the importance of greater utilization of the wingers in attack. The message looked to have got through as Crozier was rewarded with a fine individual score from rightwing Darren Penny. Penny beat his opposite number by cutting in field a full 40 meters out, leaving himself a lot of work. The pace of the bulky winger's break left him isolated from support, but his confidence and ability shone through as he cut in field again to beat two more defenders. Now at full tilt and only 10 meter out, Penny, was not going to be stopped and placed the ball to the left of the posts, for Hooker Mike Palfery to add the extras. Marine continued their attempt to contribute to the scoreboard, after failing through the forwards, they attempted to challenge Calne's back division. However, superb cover from joint man of the match and blindside flanker Richard Kearney, along with a resolute tacking display from Jenkins meant that Marine were rarely allowed to trouble Calne's three-quarters. Calne's tactical change at half time saw the introduction of 2nd team scrum half, Steve Jacket relieved stand in scrum half, Mat Arnold, who was able to return to his preferred tighthead prop slot. Mick Dyer moved to hooker and the hard working Palfrey made way. Now playing up the slope, Calne, still had a lot of work to do as Marine came out of the blocks strongly again. Marine's well organised pack continued to examine their opposite numbers for a weakness and a way through but despite being able to execute a number of different tactics and game plans, no way through was found. Calne, keen to consolidate their lead, opted for two penalty kicks when the opportunities presented themselves. One such attempt was converted by Jenkins. Calne also had the last say as Neil "playmaker" Young, spotted a crack in Marine's midfield. Young's pass set up, centre partner, Holiday for his second. The centre hit the gap at pace and with his now trademark swerve went in near the corner to round off a sharing in the man of the match award and a fine all round team performance. |
