Cricketers Run Up Another 77

A resurgent Calne scooped another 77 points against a proud Hungerford at their Anchor Road base. As with last weeks 72 point mauling of Marlborough, it was the centre partnership of Neil Young and Guthrie Holliday that stole the show. Last week Young collected his first hatrick of the season, whist, South African, Holiday picked up a brace. The roles reversed this week with Holliday nailing the hatrick, whilst Young had to settle for two.

Playing down the slope in the first half, the perpetually slow starting, Calne had to capitalise early to keep a determined and spirited Hungerford side out of the game. With a full squad and arriving early, league strugglers, Hungerford, looked to start strongly. But despite their best efforts Holliday had soon picked up his first. Number 8 Alan Wicks made the big hit from his teammates kick off. Turnover ball was won allowing Holliday to chip the defence and collect on the line exploiting some sleepy defending. Donegan nailed the first of his eleven conversions of the afternoon, leaving him with another 100% success rate.

Holliday added his second and was complimented by tries from Damon Murphy and Neil Watkins. Calne looked comfortable and in control. However Hungeford made a big stand as they felt Calne take their foot of the pedal as they started cruise. Hunergford were unlucky not to come away with points as they probed the Calne defence. The most unnerving moment, from Calne perspective, was the sight of Hungerford's outside centre cutting back in field on a planned move. He broke a number of tackles but was hauled down just short of the line thanks to a try saving tackle from, front rower, Dave Holmes.

Holliday restored Calne's nerves as his completed a first half hatrick. He joined the line at pace, changed the angle of his run, shrugged off two would be tacklers and planted the ball for Donegan's gimme conversion. New recruit and full back, Craig Hurcombe, finished the first half scoring with a stunning solo effort. He collected the ball from a sloppy clearance kick and just as he looked to have run himself into a cul-de-sac he slipped the tackle and made quick work of clearing the turf to the try line.

Hungerford restarted the second half and soon showed more grit as they came at Calne again. They keep the game scoreless as they fronted up in defence and held possession for a number of phases, however a lack of a cutting edge crippled them as Calne switched on again and set winger John Hope-Smith free. Hope-Smith rounded his man with ease and slipped by the covering full back in the dead ball zone to score between the posts. Blindside Daron Thomas kept Calne moving forward all day with his bulldozing runs, he was rewarded with a try as he burst through the tiring defence.

Young awoke. Having had enough of supplying Holliday all afternoon the inside centre started to make some breaks. He picked up his first from one of his old school trademark interceptions and his second was a scramble over the line from close range. Between Young two trys Watkins added his second as he smashed his way past the defence on a crash ball.
