Calne sweep Cricklade aside.
Calne RFC's Vice Presidents were treated to a seven try spectacular against a shell shocked Cricklade. The immaculate right boot of Andrew Donegan entertained the big crowd and inspired an emphatic victory. The first try of the day was scored by hooker, Mike Palfrey, in a devastating move from the kick off. Palfrey was released from the 4th phase and headed straight for the posts, allowing Donegan to get his sights in early. Paul Jenkins was next on the scoreboard after finishing off a break by Donegan. The favour was quickly returned 10 minutes later, when Jenkins put the Cricklade defence on the back foot and laid the ball off to Donegan for the seven points. Cricklade could do little more than hold Calne to three tries in the first half as their rare incursions into the Calne half were stopped short of Calne's 22. Only one of two penalty chances was taken to show for Cricklade's valiant efforts in the first half. Calne fourth try was arguably the best of the day. Calne again restarted the half controlling both possession and territory. During another multiphased attack against a well organised and motivated defence, prolific try scorer now playmaker, Neil Young released right wing, John Hope-Smith. Hope-Smith looked up saw his opposite number and a 2nd row, he decided to chip on the Cricklade 10 meter line and back himself against the covering Cricklade fullback. Hope-Smith won the footrace and crashed over the line to land on the ball. Damon Murphy, frustrated by a disallowed try, was in a good supporting position after a devastating run by Neil Watkins. Murphy took the pop and was not denied a second time. Calne sixth try was created by the Calne dominant pack that edged their way in to the danger zone and offered the ball to the half backs. Jenkins obliged by setting up the powerful South African, Guthrie Holidays, via another fine Young pass. Holiday had much work to do. He beat his opposite number with a hand off and set off on a lovely line to the corner, where his pace and a side step fished off the defence. Donegan nailed the tough touchline conversion attemp right down the middle. Calne's pack who had won and supplied all the ball for the backs to show of their wares was not to be out done. With the irrepressible figure of Daron Thomas now on the park the pack worked its way into Cricklade territory, Murphy broke off with Thomas in support, Cricklade managed to halt Murphy but not the athletic Thomas. Cricklade's valiant efforts were rewarded in the last play of the game. In a rare mistake, a tackle on Cricklade's winger was missed. The failed conversion attempt left the score as 49-8. The club's Vice Presidents showed their appreciation of the fine victory by helping the players to raise £200 toward the Weymouth tour in April.
