Bring on the league!

Calne took a 20 strong squad to Cirencester for their second trial game of the season. Their opponents had very strong pool of 33 players queuing up for some game time against what they had assumed to be weak opposition from Wiltshire. In fact the early passages of play were going to support their assumption as Ciren were quickly out of the blocks, stringing a number of passes together and settling in to a pick and drive game.

Ciren's great start was soon rewarded with an unconverted try, after 5 minutes, when their big and well drilled forwards blasted their way through Calne's defence with their pick and drive game. Despite the scorching conditions, a steep slop and being against what was obviously a powerful and organised Ciren side Calne took the bull by the horns and make a good account of themselves. With a good start behind them Ciren had expected Calne, who nearly slipped into Dorset and Wilts division 2 in the last campaign, to roll over. Calne never did.

With good lineout ball from the Mat Arnold and Pete McGarry combination the new look back line started wowing the crowd. Ex-Chippenham player Paul Jenkins proved to be a slippery character, seemly able to waltz thought the opposition line at will. His ability to break the gain line and unselfishly release another new signing, Guthrie 'Geeves' Holiday, brought the game to life. Ciren had no answer to Geeves' pace as he left defenders flailing in his wake. It was Calne who were to finish the first quarter stronger despite a late converted try by Ciren.

Rousing speeches from Neil Watkins and Coach John Crozier installed the belief and the second quarter kicked off and Calne now playing down the hill got on the scoreboard. Another untouchable line out was edged on by the pack before Jenkins stepped the fly half and covering flanker to then draw in the centres before releasing a sublime pass to Geeves at full tilt. The conversion was scored by acting captain Mike Charlwood.

The third quarter started with Ciren taking the ascendancy, their larger squad was paying dividends as Calne started to tire in the heat. A stronger Ciren team took the field and they were soon rewarded with a great back line move of their own, which produced a try and conversion. In an amazing move Ciren playing down the hill against a tiring Calne sided opted to kick two penalties. This was greeted by boos from their own crowed and interpreted as a sign of respect for, and by, their supposedly lowly opposition.

The last quarter saw Ciren bring on the big guns as the coach thought he saw the cracks appearing in their Wiltshire based opponents and he sensed a late flurry of points. However, James Gladding's boot put the pack into Ciren's 22 where Charlwood's quick thinking produced a fine individual score. Ciren were clearly rattled and up the intensity and aggression and as a few Calne eyes started to blacken and noses started to bleed the Jenkins - Holiday combination struck again. Charlwood's conversion left the score line very respectable and Calne highly motivated ahead of their first league fixture against Cooper Avon Tyres.
