Shut Out And Another Big Win

Calne's 46 to nothing win, in an ill-tempered affair, at Cricklade, along with good wins for the other top 4 teams, has ensured an enthralling climax to the season.

First half try's from, No. 8 Alan Wicks, Full back Darren Penny, and Winger John Hope-Smith, along with an Andy Donegan penalty, ensured a comfortable lead as Calne cruised to the interval. Despite injuries taking their toll as usual this time of season. Coach John Crozier and Captain Donegan's reshuffled pack dominated proceedings. The re-jigged front row of Mat Arnold, Jason Dolman and Ian Smart, stole Cricklade's ball on four occasions.

However, discipline was the key to the day. Calne resisted reacting to a number of late tackles and challenges. One of which resulting in winger, Vince Treen, having to leave the field and wait for an ambulance to take him for hospital treatment, a later x-ray revealing a broken collar bone.

The second half played out much the same as the first with Calne running at every opportunity and creating moves spanning the width and length of the pitch. Trys from 2nd Row Neil Watkins, Centre Guthrie Holliday and two from openside Damon Murphy were a suitable reaction to earlier affairs. Again scrum half, Donegan, and half back partner, Paul Jenkins, were instrumental in orchestrating Cricklade's demise, despite the additional pressure they were subjected to.

With just four games remaining and just one point separating a chasing pack, behind Corsham, of Westbury, Calne & Cooper Avon Tyres. It has become clear that the Anchor Road team is pivotal to the destiny of the league. A dominant Corsham have all but won the league, but with some interesting fixtures fast approaching they may not rest as easily as they would have hoped for. Corsham must first face Calne and defeat the league's most adventurous team. With a clear 100 points for collected over the season and averaging 5 trys per game, Calne have provided the most entertaining, and at times ruthless, rugby of any of their counterparts this season. Corsham must come to Calne's Anchor Rd base and face a team wanting to impress the club's Vice Presidents and sponsors. Historically, Calne have struggled to compete with Corsham's larger pack, but the home side's pack will have the motivation to front up and win enough ball for the all out attacking style the home crowd become used to.

Calne's following fixture is away to Cooper Avon. With Cooper Avon the only other team, other than Corsham and Supermarine, (however the latter has drastically fallen out of the picture), wanting promotion. Calne are expecting a major battle and a highly motivated encounter in Melksham. Following this, Calne must face off against another giant pack, and another team chasing 2nd spot, in Westbury.

Whilst Calne's run in to the season's end looks like one epic battle followed by another titanic encounter the other top teams have it a little easier. With the exception of each having to face Calne, most of the other higher placed teams will effectively pick up gimme's against the strugglers. So the big question is, will Calne sneak a win against Corsham and exorcise a ghost or two against Cooper Avon and Westbury, or will they just fade away to mid-table monotony?
