CORSHAM maintained their 100 per cent start by despatching near-neighbours Calne 25-12 in a rousing Dorset & Wilts Division One North derby at Lacock Road.

A regalvanised Calne outfit, bolstered by a number of new recruits, travelled the short distance full of confidence, but it was not to be enough against a determined home side.

A sweeping move between backs and forwards which resulted in the first try for Corsham No 8 Roy Hewett in the corner.

Corsham, dominant in both lineout and scrum, continued to hold sway and centre Nick Denham touched down a second try under the posts, fly-half Haydn Brockhurst making no mistake with the conversion.

The home side lost influential centre Tony Iacono with a shoulder injury midway through the half, but they stretched their lead further with a penalty from Brockhurst.

Trailing 15-0, Calne showed greater urgency and appetite in the closing moments of the first half, and they started on the front foot in the second half.

Pressure against the wind yielded a try for openside Damon Murphy, converted by captain Andy Donegan.

Corsham responded, however, and a further Brockhurst penalty and a converted try from lock Tim Minty .But Calne renewed their efforts, and with Corsham captain and back row Ian McNerlin harshly sin-binned for a high tackle, the visitors took advantage with a try from full-back Mike Charlwood.

Their momentum was halted by an injury to Alan Wicks and the yellow-carding of Fijian Villaine Sukami, after another harsh high-tackle call, but still they threatened in Corsham's half.
