Weymouth Vs. Calne
League ghost exorcised by Calne.
Calne secured their fist league win in a season, and banish the traumatic memories of the southern counties division, with a well grafted performance against Weymouth. Weymouth started the better of the two with clean line out ball allowing them to control the early exchanges. As Calne shook off the near 3 hour coach journey the new look half back combination of fly half James Gladding and scrum half Andy Donegan stated to pull the strings with ball won by Calne's increasingly dominant pack. Weymouth continued to win their fair share of ball only to frustrated by some furious tacking from Mike Palfrey and Mick McDaid. One such exchange saw Weymouth's back line reel from a McDaid tackle causing them to hastily move the ball down the line for the Vulture-like Neil Young to intercept and score at try converted by Donegan. Weymouth battled back and showed no signs of being deterred. Their pack drove their way up to the Calne 22 meter line where their fly half struck a sweetly time drop goal. Weymouth lifted from this score camped on Calne's try line but seemed unable to breach the defence which was the only positive aspect Calne can take from their Southern Counties experience. Calne continued to frustrate Weymouth's now unimaginative attack and played wonderful counter attacking rugby. Another surge from Calne pack brought play to just inside Weymouth's 22 when Ian Smart, on his return to the club, smashed through the game line. The well presented ball was pounced upon by Alan Wicks who send defenders reeling on a try scoring run to the line. As both side tried an infringement by McDaid was punished by a sin-binning. Weymouth now out of ideas took the 3 points on offer. Undeterred by Weymouth's one man advantage Calne continued to apply pressure and powerful work by Calne's immense back row secured ball for Young to cut apart the tired defence for the last try of the day which was converted by Donegan. |
